Drawing on contributions from around the world, this issue we dwell on interlinking issues of faith, education and environment. We feature a review of a new book published by a doctor from the Maldives that contests the God Delusion idea and highlight an initiative that brings together Bangladesh’s scientists to work for the greater good of its people. Reporting back from Ramadhan we feature photo essay on the moon sighting event in Cape Town South Africa, which as always hosts an active and vibrant Muslim community.

Abu Hanifah and Mandy Meikle both address global environmental concerns in their own ways, through climate change deliberations and the growth obsession that the Peak Oil concept points to. We include two pieces from Shafiq Morton that examine recent less-than-graceful incidents at different scales, from hostility to local interfaith encounters to the controversy surrounding that video. For those interested in mind-altering ideas, Alan Rayner details his ‘inclusionality’ perspective on the condition of human estrangement, a tool for complicating simplistic dichotomies.

Historical views of the recent and more distant pasts can remind us not to waste resources on similar mistakes and thoroughly ground any inflated views of our self-importance. The Ayman series continues with a critical appraisal of a large iconic hydroelectric power project in Malaysia.  We hope decision-makers, engineers and publics will draw insights from this sad experience. In our journal section we are fortunate to share a study into the first attempt to render the Qur’an into English, the movement of discourse on Islam in 17th Century Britain and its fascinating role in the English Revolution!

We hope you enjoy reading this issue and invite you to extend our readership and authorship.

Regards,

The IMASE Team
