Today over 2.4 billion people in the world do not have access to adequate sanitation and over 1 billion people do without safe drinking water. 3.4 million people, mostly children, die annually from water-related diseases. Most of these illnesses and deaths can be prevented through simple and inexpensive measures. To prevent such tragedies good water resource management techniques need to be implemented.
Given the brutal context briefly described above, the International
Muslim Association of Scientists and Engineers, held a seminar, in 2002
in the UK, on the water crisis and water resource management with the
aim of disseminating knowledge and initiating a focus group to discuss
and help implement sustainable water solutions in the Developing World.
